There is nothing quite like a baby’s first Christmas. The season is already awash with sparkles - but when you add a little one to the mix, it becomes something softer and sweeter. A time filled with tiny moments that stay with you long after the decorations come down. The twinkling lights, the tree, the rustle of wrapping paper. Everything feels new again because you are seeing it through the eyes of a very special baby who is discovering it for the very first time.

To help you savour every magical milestone, here are the 12 firsts of Christmas to look forward to this year; moments that become classic family stories, favourite photos and treasured traditions, year after year.

1. Their very first Christmas

Your baby’s first festive season is a time you’ll remember forever. The lights on the tree glow a little brighter. The songs you’ve heard a hundred times sound sweeter and more festive. Whether they’re mesmerised by the lights, determinedly swiping every decoration on the tree or simply snoozing through the excitement, this is your very first Christmas as a family - and it doesn’t get more special than that.

2. The first time they open door number one

The countdown to Christmas begins with the gentle pop of the first advent calendar door - or perhaps a little hand reaching inside the pocket of a refillable calendar. They might not fully understand the concept, or perhaps it falls to Mummy, Daddy or their siblings to eat the chocolate for them, but this simple ritual soon becomes part of the joyful anticipation of advent - and many magical Decembers to come.

3. The first time they know its Christmas

There is a moment when your little one suddenly realises something special is happening. It might be the shimmer of tinsel or a familiar carol playing or the excited energy in a room. Whatever it is you will see it in their face - It’s CHRISTMAS! A wide smile. A little giggle. Perhaps a sweet dance to a festive song or even a word (Santa!). That moment is as precious and fleeting as the season itself - but in that moment, you know for sure they feel the magic, too.

4. The first decoration they place on the tree

It might not end up where you intended (or, for that matter, where they intended either) but that is part of the charm. Babies love to grab, shake and (be careful!) attempt to taste anything sparkly. Keeping anything fragile aside for future years, that moment of placing a Christmas decoration on a branch marks their official role as helper. From this Christmas onwards, your tree will tell the story of your family - and whilst you may be determined to keep to an aesthetic, know this: once those handmade decorations come through, resistance is futile…

5. Their first glimpse of Santa

This milestone comes with a variety of possible reactions, each as heartwarming and potentially hilarious as the other. Awe. Confusion. Delight. Even fear - it’s not uncommon for babies to be placed on Santa’s knee only to bawl and reach for a parent once more. Whether your little one beams at Father Christmas or buries their face in your jumper, the moment is always memorable. It is the first of many magical meetings to come - and of course, all little believers are on the Nice List.

6. Their first Christmas as a big brother or sister

If your baby is not the baby any more then this Christmas has a different kind of sparkle. Watching an older sibling gently show them a decoration or help unwrap a gift is sweet, tender and heartwarming. These early interactions become the foundations of shared Christmases for years ahead - and all the joy that comes with those shared moments, traditions and memories.

7. Their first festive adventures

December days are made for cosy outings. Perhaps you wrap them up for their first winter walk or take them to see the twinkling lights outside. Even a simple trip in the pram feels like an adventure when the world is decorated for your enjoyment (a good time to save on baby sensory classes, although that extra cash may just end up on personalised decorations…). Christmas markets are a great place to wander round too; baby can stay snug in a carrier or pram whilst you wander and take in all that is merry and bright…

8. Their first night before Christmas

Matching pyjamas on. Stockings hung. A story shared softly under the glow of fairy lights. Christmas Eve feels especially precious when there is a little one to tuck in. Whether they fall asleep easily or stay wide awake with excitement (something that becomes it’s own tradition, the older they get…!) it becomes one of those evenings you wish you could bottle and keep forever.

9. Their first Christmas movie marathon

Snuggled under blankets with festive films playing in the background is a Christmas rite of passage. Whilst your baby won’t follow the plot, they’ll love the colours, songs and sounds. It is a simple family moment, without fanfare or fuss, yet one that becomes its own comforting tradition as the years go by. And of course, a little pause in the busiest season of all is always welcome.

10. Their first family photo by the tree

You attempt it on self-timer. The dog walks through the shot. Someone blinks. The baby sneezes. Yet somehow one of the pictures will be perfect because it captures life exactly as it is. Whether you’re all in Christmas jumpers, ready for the season ahead, or it’s a last minute scrambled ‘quick before Christmas is over!’ snap in your pyjamas, this is one family tradition you’ll treasure every year.

11. Their first ever Christmas dinner

Your baby might be sampling tiny tastes or simply enjoying the excitement around the table - milk counts! Either way the clinking glasses and shared laughter of those lucky enough to spend it with you for baby’s first Christmas create an atmosphere your baby will love to be part of. If your baby is starting to eat solids, Christmas dinner is a delicious way to introduce them to the very best bits of Christmas. Perhaps they’ll love Yorkshire pudding - or parsnips! - or even Brussel sprouts…

12. Your Christmas celebrating firsts with them

Whilst it’s their first Christmas, it’s your first with them, too. Every tiny moment of joy becomes a memory. Every special cuddle and gift given is something to be treasured and present for - whether it’s just the three of you (or more, if it’s their first as a sibling!) or even a whole house full of extended family. However you choose to spend it, there’s nothing quite like your baby’s very first Christmas.

Here’s to a Christmas filled with gentle joy, cosy cuddles and the kind of memories that last a lifetime.
